New GrammarlyGO Features Empower Students to Use Generative AI Responsibly

Grammarly furthers its commitment to learning with student-focused prompts, guardrails, and the ability to cite generative AI transparently

Grammarly, the company delivering AI communication assistance to over 30 million people, 50,000 professional teams, and 3,000 educational institutions daily, announced new features that guide students in leveraging generative AI to augment—not replace—their critical thinking and communication skills. These features will start rolling out in late August in GrammarlyGO, the on-demand, generative AI-powered tool that works everywhere students do, in time for the 2023/24 school year.

“Generative AI is here to stay, but the education industry is grappling with how to approach new technologies in ways that enhance student learning—not detract from it”

With these new features coming to GrammarlyGO, students can learn to use generative AI conscientiously—helping educational institutions uphold academic integrity and prepare students for the AI-connected workplace:

  • Suggested ideation prompts encourage students to collaborate with generative AI—not let it do the work for them: Academic-focused GrammarlyGO prompts for students will focus on constructive and contextually relevant use cases aimed at helping students overcome the blank page problem, like “brainstorm topics for my assignment” or “build a research plan for my paper.”
  • Feedback prompts and output explanations support student learning as they write: With GrammarlyGO’s suggested prompts for feedback, students can “evaluate the strength of a thesis statement,” “explore counterarguments,” and more. The outputs will include explanations, giving students a deeper understanding of GrammarlyGO’s recommendations so they can improve their critical thinking and communication skills over time.
  • Auto-citations simplify citing generative AI, enabling ethical use and transparency for educators: Grammarly will now offer customers the ability to generate a citation for text generated by tools such as GrammarlyGO and ChatGPT. Grammarly already provides auto-citations for popular research websites and plagiarism detection from billions of web pages and ProQuest’s academic databases, helping students cite all their resources effectively and efficiently while in the flow of work.
  • AI guideline reminders assist students in responsibly using generative AI: GrammarlyGO will discourage students from generating long-form text if they attempt to do so, with messaging within the product that redirects them to ideate with GrammarlyGO instead while reminding them to adhere to their institution’s or instructor’s policies.

“Generative AI is here to stay, but the education industry is grappling with how to approach new technologies in ways that enhance student learning—not detract from it,” said Jenny Maxwell, Head of Grammarly for Education. “When educators prioritize fostering the responsible use of AI in their institutions and courses, they ensure students build critical thinking abilities and AI literacy that the workforce of today demands. With these new GrammarlyGO features, Grammarly demonstrates its continued commitment to higher education, helping institutions and educators set their students up for success through their academic careers and beyond.”

Grammarly has long provided real-time, best-in-class writing suggestions to help students communicate with clarity and confidence wherever they write. Grammarly can now support students throughout their entire writing journey—from early ideation of an essay outline to writing and organizing arguments, revising for clarity and correctness, and more.
