What You Should Know:

UC San Diego Health has announced the appointment of Dr. Karandeep Singh, MD, as the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Endowed Chair in Digital Health Innovation at University of California School of Medicine and the inaugural Chief Health Artificial Intelligence (AI) Officer at UC San Diego Health.

– This newly created position emphasizes the health system’s commitment to advancing the use of AI in healthcare, ensuring patient safety and improving health outcomes.

Chief Health AI Officer Primary Focus

Dr. Singh’s primary focus as Chief Health AI Officer will be:

– Implementing AI solutions that improve patient safety and health outcomes across acute and ambulatory settings.

– Bridging the gap between academic research and clinical practice by integrating cutting-edge AI technologies into clinical workflows.

– Reducing administrative burdens on healthcare providers, thereby enhancing the patient experience.

– Establishing an appropriate framework for responsible and accountable AI deployment within the healthcare system.

This appointment strengthens the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for Health Innovation (JCHI), established in September 2021 to develop innovative and advanced healthcare solutions. JCHI aims to leverage AI responsibly and inclusively to improve human health and sustainability.

A generous $22M donation from Joan and Irwin Jacobs in early 2023 further propelled JCHI’s mission, leading to the creation of a cutting-edge “mission control center” that utilizes AI for advanced healthcare analysis.
