RALEIGH – VinFast’s expansion journey to the US from Vietnam and the auto plant it expects to construct in Chatham County is making headlines this week on two fronts.

The electric vehicle automaker on Monday said its second shipment of vehicles is on the way to the United States and Canada.

And on Wednesday Gov. Roy Cooper as well as other guests will host a media event in Sanford along with Arun Venkataraman, Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Global Markets and Director General of the U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service; and Brook Taylor, Vice President for Government Affairs and Strategic Partnerships at VinFast.

VinFast’s current shipment of vehicles numbers 1,879 with nearly 1,100 of those coming to the US. The others will be delivered in Canada. All are being shipped aboard the cargo vessel Silver Queen. The trans-Pacific journey will require 20 days, according to VinFast.

The vehicles are the VF8 model.

“After completing imported procedures and required licenses and certificates, VinFast expects to hand over these VF 8 standards to the US customers in May and Canadian customers in June,” the company said.

In March, VinFast said it was delaying production at the Chatham County plant until 2025

Wednesday’s event is scheduled at the Central Carolina Community College’s E. Eugene Moore Manufacturing and Biotech Solutions Center at 3 p.m. The Moore Center is located at 2101 Nash St., Sanford.
