Federal agents executed a search warrant on former World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE: WWE) CEO Vince McMahon on July 17, as disclosed in the company’s recent quarterly Securities Exchange Commission (SEC) filing. At this point, no charges have been formally filed against McMahon; however, he has been issued a federal grand jury subpoena.

This investigation comes nearly a year after McMahon resigned as chairman and CEO and subsequently retired from the company amidst allegations of sexual misconduct. Additionally, there were reports indicating that he paid over $12 million to four women over a 16-year span to conceal his alleged improprieties. In response to these serious allegations, federal authorities and the SEC launched an investigation into McMahon in July of 2022.

During Wednesday’s investors call, the current CEO, Nick Khan, stated, “We continue to fully cooperate with any investigation. Outside of that, we are not going to comment on any legal matter.”

The specific allegations against McMahon include payments he allegedly made to silence women, such as a $7.5 million payment in 2018 to a former wrestler who claimed that McMahon coerced her into a sexual encounter before demoting her and refusing to renew her contract in 2005. Another payment of $1 million in 2008 was made to a WWE contractor who alleged that McMahon sent her unsolicited nude photos. In 2006, McMahon is said to have made a $1 million payment to a former WWE manager with whom he allegedly initiated a sexual relationship. Finally, a $3 million payment in 2022 went to a former paralegal who claimed to have had an affair with McMahon.

Amidst the investigation and allegations, WWE conducted an internal inquiry into McMahon’s conduct in November. Following the inquiry, he was unanimously voted back onto the board in January. Later, in April, WWE merged with UFC, resulting in a valuation of $21 billion.

In response to the recent developments, McMahon released a separate statement maintaining his innocence and expressing confidence that the government’s investigation will exonerate him from any alleged misconduct.

As of July 21, McMahon has been on medical leave due to major spinal surgery. Despite his leave, he will continue to fulfill his role as the Executive Chairman of WWE until further notice.

The wrestling promotion is on its way to one of its four biggest premium live events for the year, SummerSlam, happening this Saturday in Detroit, Michigan.
